Take a step back - have we considered why we’re even bothering to talk about this topic?

  • Eg: Which iPad should you buy? Why do we care? Because it’s confusing af - Apple’s lineup of iPads is confusing, with 5 different iPads at different price points with different storage configuration options. You’re going to be living with this iPad for at least a few years, so you want to make the right choice.
  • Eg: How to type really fast. Why are we talking about it? Well, obviously typing makes up such a ridiculously large part of most people’s lives, socialising, work etc. If we can improve our typing speed from X to Y, or by Z%, it has so many benefits to our productivity, but also to our creativity (speed of thought = speed of typing) and to our relationships (you can reply to friends and emails faster…) this last point would be said a bit tongue-in-cheek (View Highlight)

Research

  • How’s this concept doing on YouTube?
    • How “Worth it” is this video to make?
      • This shouldn’t prevent us from doing the video, but likely sets an idea of what the upward limit is
  • Any videos outperforming relative to their subscribe count?
    • What’s special about this?
      • What are their titles and thumbnails?
      • What’s the video actually like?
      • Anything we can leverage here?

Hook / Intro

  • Your hook should in the first 4 seconds re-confirm what the title promised the view.
  • In the first 15 seconds, establish the video’s essential question / point of tension
  • In the first 20 seconds establish how this video is going to provide unique value to the viewer by resolving the point of tension
  • Signposting — making it clear the parts of the video at the start. It’s a bit like a table of contents of what to expect.
  • Make a concise thesis statement
  • Make sure the first minute is as to the point as possible. Remove any unnecessary context / over-explanation

Mentors

If we’re asking our audience to listen to us and follow our advice, it’s helpful that they see that we’ve taken advice ourselves from a mentor. These don’t have to be personal connections but could be mentors who’ve had an indirect effect through their books, courses or videos. Almost every hero has a mentor.
