Being a generalist is not necessarily the easy path. It is unclear what you call yourself when people ask what you do, or what role you perform. I recently went to a Product Workshop and asked which role do you perform:

  • Engineering
  • Design
  • Strategy
  • Product Management

I said all of the above.

When people ask what I am or what I do, there isn’t a clear-cut answer. I’m a designer who codes, but ultimately lives in the world of product strategy. It works fine for me because I work in a small company, but if I worked in a larger company it would probably mean picking only one of the hats to wear.

There isn’t a prescribed path for what I’m doing.
